Uma Kumar
Uma Kumar is a “B High” graded artist of All India Radio, and holds a Masters degree in Music from Bangalore University. She has pursued her career in music by perfectly combining the aspect of performance backed by a deep understanding of the theory of classical music, which has made her a sought after performer and a respected teacher.
She has focused on academic excellence in music for over two decades and has successfully earned accreditation from multiple organisations of repute. Vidwat grade exam of The Karnataka State Examination Board (KSEEB),‘Sangeetha Kousthuba’ from Subbaramaiah Fine Arts & ‘Gamaka Pareena’ exam conducted by the Gamakakala Parishat are among the key certifications she has earned.
Her quest for knowledge continues as she pursues her PhD in Music from Bangalore University.
Uma Kumar is furthering her lineage through the creation of Mahati Cultural Academy, an organisation dedicated for teaching and promoting Indian art forms and culture.
She has many disciples who are pursuing senior and proficiency grade music learning.
- She was also a faculty at the Keshava College Of Music and Dance from 2007-2010.
- Mahati Cultural Academy, apart from mentoring learners for performing classical music, also focuses on academic sessions, thus helping them imbibe the grammar of music.
- Uma Kumar has also been a music coordinator at NCC for Karnataka and Goa during the Republic Day celebrations held at Delhi.

Scholarships and Competitions
Uma Kumar’s talent and knowledge has found consistent recognition through the scholarships she has earned from The Ministry Of Culture, Government of India and The Karnataka Sangeetha Nritya Academy scholarship which was awarded to her for four years.
She has also won a prize in the annual competition conducted by The Academy of Music, Chowdiah Memorial Hall.
Her teaching ability has been qualified by the National Entrance Test for lectureship conducted by UGC, Government of India.
Rich and Celebrated Tradition
Uma Kumar’s initial tutoring in carnatic music began from Vidwan Somnath. She has also had the privilege of being under the guidance of Vidushi Geetha Vasanth Koppa and Vidushi Renuka Rudrapatna. She has also been tutored by Vidwan M Prabhakar and Dr Rohini Mohan in Light Classical Music for which she has received the state scholarship for 3 consecutive years from Sangeetha Nritya Academy.
Uma Kumar has had the fortune of a long learning career under the guidance of Maestro Ganakalabhushana Vidushi Nagamani Srinath. The perfectionist trait of her teacher has had a profound influence on Uma Kumar’s music.
Prof. Nagamani Srinath has imbibed the great tradition of Vidwan Ramanad Krishnan and the reputed teacher and scholar, Prof. V Ramaratnam.

Uma Kumar’s talent, practice, lineage and her environment has made her a noteworthy performer. The experience she has imbibed, through her consistent vocal support to her teacher, has helped her hone her performing skills.
Uma Kumar has performed in esteemed music organisations and temples across South- India. Sri Rama Seva Mandali, Fort High School, The Bangalore Gayana Samaja, Academy of Music,Chowdiah Memorial Hall, The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Indian Institute of World Culture are among the important venues where she has performed.
Ganabharathi, Nadasurabhi, sangeetha sabhas of Mylapore (Chennai), Rajamahal Vilas and Sanjaynagar are among the prominent music organisations that have featured Uma Kumar’s vocal recitals.
The Chembai Utsavam, Rudrapatna Sangeetotsava, Ramotsava at Malleshwaram, N R Colony and Hosahalli, the Gokulashtami festival in Malleshwaram, are some of the popular festivals during which she has performed.
